> **Short answer** Google Search can call local businesses with an AI agent to ask a customer’s questions about price and availability. Decide in advance who answers, what you will quote, and whether to allow these calls in your Business Profile settings. Treat the caller like any customer, and write down what you said.

Customers now ask Google to do the phoning for them. In the US, Google Search offers a way to have AI check pricing and availability with local businesses, and the AI places the calls. If you run a service business, one of those calls may reach you, and it is worth deciding how to handle it before it does. The details below reflect Google’s public description at the time of writing (September 2026) and may change, so check Google’s current help pages.

## What is Google’s AI calling a business about?

According to Google, a person searching for a service such as pet grooming or dry cleaning can choose an option to have AI check pricing. They fill in a short form about what they need. Google’s AI then calls local businesses to ask about price and availability, and reports back. It is meant to save the customer from calling around themselves.

## How do you know whether it is a real customer request?

The caller is an AI agent acting for a person who wants a quote or a time. It is a genuine lead in the sense that a real customer is comparing businesses, and it is also one of several calls that customer’s request produced. Treat the call as a request for information, not as a booking. It is reasonable to answer plainly and briefly, and to keep a note of what you said.

## How do you control whether these calls reach you?

Google says a business can manage this in its Business Profile settings, where the advanced settings let you allow or reject automated calls and texts from Google. Under “Google automated calls and text messages”, Google lists three features you can turn on or off: bookings and inquiries from customers, keeping your profile up to date, and posting to your profile on your behalf. Check the settings in your own profile to see what is switched on. During a call, you can also say that you do not want to be called this way; Google’s help page gives the wording “Please remove my business from your list.”

## How should your team answer an AI caller?

- Decide who answers and what they may quote. A price range for common jobs is easier to give than a price for every case.
- Say what is included and what is not, and what could change the price.
- Answer the questions asked, and be honest about availability. Do not promise a slot you cannot hold.
- Note the date and time of the call and what you said, in the same place you keep other requests.
- If a person calls back to book, treat it as a new booking and check the calendar as you would for any other.

## What does this mean for an AI receptionist?

An AI agent can take a call from another AI agent, and both sides can now confirm things quickly. The risk is the same as with any call: a quote or slot spoken aloud is not a booking. A price quoted on the phone should match what your website says, and an availability answer should come from the calendar, not from memory. Notaray is in development at Agnotiq, and how it will handle calls from other AI agents is not decided yet.
